History of Beachside: A Journey Through Time

Beachside has a rich and storied history that spans over centuries, weaving together tales of resilience, community, and natural beauty. This history page invites you to embark on a captivating journey through the past, discovering the remarkable milestones that have shaped the charming coastal haven we know today.

Early Settlement and Naming

Beachside traces its roots back to the 19th century when it was first settled as Wild Bite. The name Wild Bite reflected the settlement’s unique geographical location, fully exposed to the powerful Atlantic Ocean on one side. As one of the earliest places to be settled in the region, Wild Bite (later known as Wild Bight) was listed in the 1857 census, marking its presence in the history books.

The Evolution of Beachside

The journey to the name “Beachside” was not without its twists and turns. In 1963, a vote was held to change the name from Wild Bight to something more representative of the area’s peaceful ambiance. Dr. Thompson, an optometrist from St. John’s who spent his summers in the settlement, introduced the name “Brookside” as a more fitting alternative. The community embraced the new name, and it gained popularity. Eventually, after careful consideration and collaboration between the local church and council, the name “Beachside” was officially adopted in April 1982.

Religious Heritage: The Rise of Pentecostalism

Beachside has deep religious roots, particularly in the Pentecostal denomination. The influence of Pentecostalism in the community dates back to 1927 when two local men, Walter and Claude Young, were captivated by the Pentecostal message during a visit to Springdale. Inspired, they invited Pastor Tom Mitchell to Beachside to conduct services, which were initially held in the home of Fannie Young. Over time, the congregation grew, and the former Orange Lodge became the first Pentecostal church in the area. The dedication and commitment of local pastors and community members have played a pivotal role in the growth and strength of the Pentecostal faith in Beachside.

Economic Foundations: Fishing, Logging, and Mining

Throughout its history, Beachside has relied on various industries to sustain its economy. Fishing, in particular, has been a vital source of livelihood for the community. With its proximity to the ocean, generations of Beachside residents have braved the waters, casting their nets and hauling in bountiful catches.

In addition to fishing, Beachside embraced logging and mining as economic ventures. The community’s resourcefulness and adaptability allowed residents to diversify their occupations and support their families through these industries.

Community Spirit and Growth

Beachside is renowned for its strong sense of community. As the population grew and the settlement developed, Beachside witnessed numerous milestones and improvements. In 1961, Beachside was officially incorporated as a municipality, establishing a council and marking a new era of local governance. Infrastructure, such as power lines and a post office, brought modern conveniences to the community, enhancing the quality of life for its residents.
